Special features

Below you will find brief instructions on how new doctoral students can become members of the "Materials Chemistry and Catalysis" (= MatKat) doctoral programme.

All applicants must submit the following documents:

  • A short letter of application explaining your personal motivation to work at MatKat.
  • A short curriculum vitae with list of publications, if available.
  • A copy of your university entrance qualification (Abitur certificate).
  • Bachelor's and Master's degrees (or diploma degrees) from a field of study that is directly related to the doctoral programme (e.g. physics, chemistry, biochemistry, material sciences).
  • If an applicant has passed all relevant examinations but no certificates have yet been issued (e.g. Master's certificate), alternative proof of academic achievement ("confirmation citing the individual grades of all academic achievements") can be submitted.
  • Where available, evidence of special qualifications (e.g. vocational training, awards, internships, scholarships, stays abroad), if these relate to the content of the doctoral programme.
  • Three suggested specialist mentors. The scientific networks within MatKat should be used as far as possible in selecting mentors.
  • A research proposal in which the content and planned work of the thesis project are presented briefly.

Students in a Master's programme with significantly above-average grades who wish to apply directly from the Master's programme for fast-track access should also submit:

  • A covering letter stating the reasons for applying for inclusion in the fast-track option of the doctoral programme.
  • Proof of at least 27 credit points earned to date in a Master's programme related to the doctoral programme.
